Catalog log
Broadcast listing — not a TV Flash recap.
Airing eleven years after my Howard University dissertation trumped extant evidence disclaiming a gender neutral American culture, episode 11 from season 5 is the mother lode imitation of silk purse life from a sow's ear. The African Queen ending does nothing to obscure this producer's eurocentric bias toward aryan motherhood & his imprimatur that blacks embrace their own out-of-Africa evolution.

Why this series still plays
The Cosby spin-off that outgrew its premise: Denise leaves, Debbie Allen arrives, and Hillman becomes an HBCU sitcom with actual campus politics. Jasmine Guy's Whitley and Kadeem Hardison's Dwayne turned a romance into appointment TV. Post-makeover seasons show how Black college life got a national living room — funny, pointed, and suddenly its own show.
Thursday used to mean a brownstone, then it meant a campus. NBC, 1987–1993: A Different World spins off The Cosby Show via Denise, lands at Hillman College, and has to outgrow the mothership in public. Students juggle classes, politics, class tension, and romance — an HBCU sitcom that could have remained a living-room annex and instead became its own network night. Bill Cosby is in the creation file. Debbie Allen's producing and directing is the weather that reshapes the series. Jasmine Guy's Whitley and Kadeem…
