Stuck in the ocean miles from shore, Dexter is rescued by an old boat carrying illegal immigrants to the US. Once ashore, he heads home hoping to figure out where and when Travis next move. Travis has holed up in a small house and has killed the occupants. While he's away, the police show up and Dexter has something of a surprise waiting for him. Dexter makes it to son Harrison's school recital only to have Travis take the child. Meanwhile, Debra has a plan to catch Travis and gets LaGuerta's support for her plan. Debra also comes to terms with her feelings for Dexter. In his final confrontation with Travis, Dexter has him tied down on his execution table. Someone walks in just as he's committing the deed.

Why this series still plays
Miami blood-spatter analyst by day, vigilante with a code by night: Michael C. Hall made Showtime's serial-killer POV a global export. Early seasons balance case-of-week and dread; later endings and revivals reopened every argument. Premium-cable antihero comfort food with a body count.
October 1, 2006, Showtime puts a blood-spatter analyst on the night like a network once put a cop on Monday: appointment pulp with better lighting and worse manners. Dexter Morgan moonlights as a vigilante bound by a code that lets the living room become co-conspirator. James Manos Jr. developed Jeff Lindsay's novels; Michael C. Hall — still carrying the quiet of *Six Feet Under* — made dual life look like a mid-tempo dance of charm and ice. Jennifer Carpenter's Debra, Julie Benz's Rita, Erik King's Doakes, a…

Erik King made Sgt. James Doakes the only man who smelled the code on Dexter — Miami blood-spatter by day, Showtime's vigilante POV, and a sergeant who treated Michael C. Hall's smile like a crime scene. TV Flash files him as 2000s…
- Lauren Velez as Maria LaGuerta
