Why this series still plays
Helen Mirren’s Jane Tennison walks into a boys’-club murder room and does not ask permission. British prestige crime as event import: class, sexism, and procedure without the American hug. Detective television that treats authority as something a woman has to seize weekly — cold, adult, and still the benchmark every later female cop drama gets measured against.
So about last night in the murder room: Helen Mirren's Jane Tennison walks in and does not ask permission, and the group chat still treats that door as canon. Lynda La Plante created the ITV series (premiere 1991). British prestige crime as event import — class, sexism, procedure without the American hug. (I said spoiler-free. Authority is the plot.) **Tennison is the benchmark, not a mascot.** Lana can keep the Masterpiece gown; the replies are still measuring every later woman-cop drama against this entrance.
