Why this series still plays
Watch it for the cut: a Japanese-language epic that treats protocol as plot, translation as drama, and stillness as spectacle. Ten hours, novel-complete in this pack, with Sanada and Sawai doing the actual arguing while the carpets wait.
Watch the stillness before anyone draws. Hiroyuki Sanada’s Toranaga does not play power as volume. He plays it as weather: a look held a second too long, a council arranged like a sentence with the verb delayed. That is the work. Shōgun, adapted by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks from James Clavell’s novel, opened on FX and Hulu in February 2024 as if American prestige television had remembered how to wait. The first image is not a carpet. It is a world that refuses to explain itself at trailer speed.
