In the series
Why this series still plays
Watch it as a six-season fitting: three actresses wearing one job, Diana as a silhouette the cameras already thought they owned, and palace image-management as the actual plot. The jewels are punctuation. The posture is the sentence.
The first image is not a crown. It is a young woman in a coat that already knows more than the men in the room. Claire Foy's Elizabeth arrives like a held breath in wool: posture as policy, pearls as punctuation, a face that understands cameras because the cameras invented her job. Netflix did not drop a history lesson in November 2016. It dropped a fitting. Six seasons later the fabric changes, the actress changes, the century changes. The assignment does not.

- Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II (seasons 3–4)
Olivia Colman inherited The Crown’s middle-era Queen Elizabeth II with steel, ache, and awards gravity — after Fleabag’s godmother monologue melted the internet. Post-Foy reincarnation proved the series’ casting gambit worked. On TV Flash…
- Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II (seasons 5–6)
Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II — The Crown’s last reincarnation, seasons 5 and 6 — is the cost of the portrait. Claire Foy is the becoming; Olivia Colman the middle distance; Staunton the years that already know the bill. Netflix…
- Matt Smith as Prince Philip (seasons 1–2)
Matt Smith brought restless energy to young Prince Philip on The Crown, then dragon-prince chaos as Daemon Targaryen on House of the Dragon. Dual prestige franchises, two kinds of succession crisis. TV Flash files him under casting…
- Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip (seasons 3–4)

- Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles (seasons 3–4)
Josh O’Connor’s Prince Charles — The Crown seasons 3 and 4 — is Peter Morgan’s middle heir in the Diana years the carpet still treats as a live wire. Netflix royal serial as wardrobe argument; two-season reincarnations. On TV Flash he is…
