Built around Brandy's persona, but the house has realer edges than a pure vehicle: family argument, diary room, a girl lead who isn't a cartoon.

Why this series still plays
Brandy as a teen with a diary room and a house of realer edges than TGIF usually allowed. UPN sitcom craft around a Black girl lead who can be funny, stubborn, and famous without becoming a cartoon. Coming-of-age with a cliffhanger that still infuriates — start for the voice, stay for a family comedy that actually argued.
So about the diary room: Brandy as a teen who can be funny, stubborn, and famous without becoming a cartoon, and a group chat that still has not forgiven the finale. Ralph Farquhar, Sara V. Finney, and Vida Spears created the UPN sitcom (1996–2001) around Brandy Norwood's star persona. (I said spoiler-free. I lied a little: **the pregnancy cliffhanger is the argument.**) Lana can keep the TGIF gown; this house had realer edges than that fitting usually allowed.
