The 2013 premiere is the Piper on-ramp. Stay long enough for the flashback structure to hand the show to the ensemble — that handoff is the point.

Why this series still plays
Jenji Kohan's Litchfield ensemble: Piper opens the gate, then Uzo Aduba, Danielle Brooks, Natasha Lyonne, Laverne Cox, and the chorus take the yard. Flashbacks recontextualize inmates the system flattens. Early Netflix's signature comedy-drama — prison as a society, not a privileged diary, with representation that launched careers.
July 11, 2013: a privileged newcomer walks into Litchfield and the yard takes the hour. Jenji Kohan built *Orange Is the New Black* from Piper Kerman's memoir, and Taylor Schilling's Piper Chapman is the ticket, not the house. Max will file this as a vending-machine phenomenon — seven seasons, ninety-one episodes, one of Netflix's most-watched early originals. The older pattern is an ensemble that outgrows its star. Prison as a society, not a privileged diary. Comedy, cruelty, and solidarity sharing the cafeteria.
