Why this series still plays
For championship multi-cam farce that outplayed its parent show: door ballet, radio-booth vanity, and a second Crane who is an instrument, not a copy. Eleven seasons of people failing to live at the altitude they advertised — on purpose.
The Good Son (September 16, 1993) is a relocation and a dare. Frasier Crane — already famous from a Boston bar — returns to Seattle, puts his father in the spare life, and tries to live at a cultural altitude the sitcom format is not supposed to support. The dare works. Kelsey Grammer's spinoff does not sand the Cheers character into a mascot; it builds a farce engine around vanity, filial friction, and a radio show that treats advice as performance. David Hyde Pierce's Niles is not a copy. He is a second…
Filed against
- Kelsey Grammer as Frasier Crane
Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane spun from Cheers bar intellectual into Frasier’s opera-volume farce — a spinoff that out-fancified the original. Radio-shrink energy, door ballet, 1990s Must-See TV. On TV Flash he is proof a supporting…
- David Hyde Pierce as Niles Crane
David Hyde Pierce’s Niles Crane is not a copy — the second Crane as instrument, not mascot, in eleven seasons of opera-volume farce that outplayed Cheers. Door ballet, radio-booth vanity, a will-they that was never a ratings stunt if you…
- John Mahoney as Martin Crane
John Mahoney’s Martin Crane is the unsentimental spine of Frasier — a Seattle apartment, a spare life, filial friction at opera volume. The Cheers spinoff’s farce needed a father who would not live at the advertised altitude. On TV Flash…
- Jane Leeves as Daphne Moon
Jane Leeves’s Daphne Moon is Frasier as the physical-wit in the Seattle apartment — farce at opera volume, a spinoff that out-fancified Cheers, and a Manchester accent the Crane boys could not aestheticize away. Martin, Daphne, and Roz…
- Peri Gilpin as Roz Doyle
Peri Gilpin’s Roz Doyle kept Frasier’s opera from becoming a duet of Cranes — producer as skeptic, radio booth as farce engine, a Seattle woman who would not live at the altitude the brothers advertised. Eleven NBC seasons of…
- Dan Butler as Bulldog Briscoe
Dan Butler’s Bulldog Briscoe barked through Frasier as sports-radio chaos opposite opera-volume farce — a spinoff that out-fancified Cheers. Crude energy as perfect foil in a Seattle apartment built for door-slamming championship craft.…
