Dwight Schultz

Dwight Schultz plays H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock on The A-Team, peak 1980s action cheese with a cast that became weather. Mr. T alone is a cultural event; George Peppard's Hannibal and Dirk Benedict's Faceman fill the van. Schultz's Murdock is the unhinged instrument — a pilot who treats sanity as optional equipment. Wrongfully accused commandos, scrap-built tanks, mayhem without the gore.

Dwight Schultz keeps H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock on the NBC clock from 1983–1987. In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit — and then television made them a rolling armory of hair, cigars, and cartoon violence. H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock is the weekly temperature, not a souvenir. That is ensemble work: a weekly body, not a clip the series can outsource.

Dwight Schultz's door is s01e01 — Mexican Slayride: Part 1 assembles the plan: Peppard, Mr. T, Benedict, Schultz — wrongfully accused commandos as Friday-night cheese with immortal casting. s01e02 keeps H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock in the weekly grammar (Mexican Slayride: Part 2 is the two-parter's second hour: I love it when a plan comes together, already a ritual, not a line). s02e11 is still the later climate: Steel is a mid-run title that is also the brand: scrap-built hardware, bloodless mayhem, formula as popcorn craft. Those hours are position on The A-Team, not a recap.

TV Flash keeps Murdock in the van because formula needs a wild card. I love it when a plan comes together still works; Murdock is why the plan sounds like a joke and a threat. We file Schultz as 1980s popcraft: the Howling Mad engine inside a show that remains proudly, perfectly cheese. Keep the filing small: H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock on The A-Team, Dwight Schultz as the weekly temperature, NBC as the clock.
