Johnny Carson

Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, NBC’s 11:30 for nearly thirty years: monologue, desk, couch, and a golf swing as host craft. Ed McMahon and Doc Severinsen made the furniture feel like a national after-party. Watch it to see why every later late-night host still inherits or rebels against Burbank. Carson is the constitution of the form, a swing as punctuation.

Carson should be met as the desk at s1962e01. October 1, 1962 — the opener that locked NBC's 11:30 furniture: monologue, desk, and the long lease on who gets the couch. Later weather is s1979e234: A late-decade Burbank night as ritual, not plot: the host craft fully formed after the New York years. The 1962–1992 NBC window is enough.

The after-party is the country. On TV Flash Carson is 1960s late-night craft: the host who made 11:30 photograph as a civic habit, a desk that taught America how to stay up, still the weather every successor argues with.

Johnny Carson will be missed if you chase only the famous bit. Johnny Carson is filed as 1960s-forward late-night constitution, the Tonight Show as weather — the ritual, not a guest chair. Hold s1967e16 when the hour still has to turn. A named mid-sixties guest hour with Cavett and Mason on the sofa — the after-party furniture at full national wattage.

Carson still has s1979e234 if two hours are not enough. A late-decade Burbank night as ritual, not plot: the host craft fully formed after the New York years. Same job, later light.
