Siân Phillips

Siân Phillips plays Livia on I, Claudius, the palace weather inside a BBC studio that somehow feels like power. Derek Jacobi stammers through Graves' Rome while poison, incest, and imperial gossip do the weekly work of a prestige soap. Phillips makes the talky history vicious without battle extras — a stillness that photographs as manners and plays as a coup. No armies required when the room itself is the battlefield.

I, Claudius needed Livia to feel occupied. Siân Phillips is how BBC / PBS got that from 1976 forward. s01e01 is the listed door — A Touch of Murder opens Graves as prestige soap. Jacobi already stammering through palace gossip. I, Claudius never had to explain Phillips; the hour just used her. BBC / PBS, 1976. I, Claudius does not replace Phillips with a different product at s01e05. Poison is Queen is the thesis on the card. Imperial gossip as craft: studio-bound. She is still Livia.

The hour that still shows the turn is s01e04. What Shall We Do About Claudius? is the family asking the title question. Talky. s01e05 if you are greedy. Poison is Queen is the thesis on the card. Imperial gossip as craft: studio-bound. Livia is the constant. Skip treating every week as equal. s01e04 is where Phillips's temperature changes.

Watch it for the gossip that treats empire as a family argument. On TV Flash she is 1970s costume-drama steel: the reason a palace hour still feels dangerous in a box set, and the reason the stammer is not the only weapon on the floor.
