Darius McCrary

Darius McCrary plays Eddie Winslow on Family Matters, the son inside a Perfect Strangers spin-off about the Winslows that got hijacked by a high-voiced nerd in suspenders. Jaleel White’s Urkel is the decade’s breakout-character takeover; McCrary is the household that got taken over — Chicago warmth, a brother who keeps the sitcom from becoming only a cartoon.

ABC/CBS treated Family Matters (1989–1998) as a going concern. Start for the warmth; stay for the son who made the takeover still feel like a family. Darius McCrary is how that concern still has Eddie Winslow.

If you want the contract, s01e01 is the door. The Mama Who Came to Dinner is a Perfect Strangers spin-off as Chicago household: warmth first, the high-voiced takeover not yet the whole show. Skip ahead to s02e01 when you need the job with weight on it. Rachel's Place is season two still a family sitcom: the Winslows before the cartoon, TGIF not yet a Urkel delivery system. Darius still reads as Eddie Winslow there, which is the point.

TGIF juggernaut energy still needed a Winslow who could roll his eyes and mean it. On TV Flash McCrary is 1980s ensemble craft: Eddie as the reason the house photographs as a family first, even after the suspenders ate the show. Keep him on Family Matters seating chart as Eddie Winslow — 1989–1998, ABC/CBS. His temperature is why a rewatch still has a hole without him. The magazine keeps the credit honest: Eddie Winslow on Family Matters, 1989–1998. Family Matters still needs Eddie Winslow to look like a job, not a footnote.
