Neil Patrick Harris

Doogie Howser, M.D. treats genius as gift and social handicap: early-nineties network warmth, a diary punchline, Vinnie as civilian best friend. Harris plays the kid as the entire series — not a gimmick intern, a lead who has to grow on camera while the computer blinks. The journal is the form. He made prodigy medical dramedy feel like a person learning a job.

The desk files Doogie Howser, M.D. under ABC 1989–1993. Doogie Howser is the temperature Harris brought to the room. File s01e01 as ignition: Teenage doctor, glowing computer journal: Neil Patrick Harris arriving fully formed, the kid already the expert. s02e01 is later weather: Doogenstein: high-concept title on network warmth, Vinnie still the civilian best friend the room needs. That is the gossip: Doogie Howser as work, Doogie Howser, M.D. as the room.

How I Met Your Mother sprawled Ted’s mother-meeting myth around him: Carter Bays and Craig Thomas building callbacks inside a CBS multi-cam, Barney as the engine the binge still quotes. On TV Flash Harris is 1990s–2000s sitcom voltage — the glowing diary and the slap. Binge for the mythology. Litigate the closer on your own time. The kid was already the event.

Harris's Barney Stinson lives on How I Met Your Mother — CBS from 2005–2014, 2000s weather still attached. s01e01 is the door — Pilot installs Ted Mosby's sprawling how-I-met story: CBS multi-cam with a future-tense narrator, Barney already warming up the catchphrase engine. s09e24 keeps the climate: Last Forever (2) is the closer that remains a group-chat civil war — binge the callbacks, then argue the ending like it aired last night. Watch the hour, not a clip farm. Harris is still the assignment.
