Peyton Place moved the dirty-secret small town into prime time twice a week, proving serial soap heat could live after dinner. Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal left as stars from New England façades already famous on film. It is the bridge from the 1957 Fox picture to Dallas — gossip occupying a network slot before nighttime soaps were a genre.
