How this season is filed

Filed by Lana Reyes · Red Carpet Reality

Six episodes. That's the entire series. Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker visual-gag density with Leslie Nielsen discovering deadpan as a religion, then ABC canceled it for requiring too much attention. The Naked Gun movies are the revenge tour. A compact master class in background jokes that punish anyone who only listens.

TV Flash files Season 1 of Police Squad! (1982) on ABC as the only listed season — 6 listed hours, 1982-03-04–1982-07-08 from “A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)” (S01E01) to “Testimony of Evil (Dead Men Don't Laugh)” (S01E06). Titles, dates, and synopses on file — no invented recaps.

Desk essentials in this season

  1. S01E01 A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)

A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise) is the six-hour contract: background jokes that punish anyone who only listens, Nielsen discovering deadpan.

  2. S01E02 Ring of Fear (A Dangerous Assignment)

Ring of Fear (A Dangerous Assignment) is already too much attention for ABC: visual-gag density as religion, the later Naked Gun revenge tour implied.

  3. S01E03 The Butler Did It (A Bird in the Hand)

The Butler Did It (A Bird in the Hand) stacks a cliché and a parenthetical: ZAZ packing gags in the frame, cancellation already warming up.

  4. S01E05 Rendezvous at Big Gulch (Terror in the Neighborhood)

Rendezvous at Big Gulch (Terror in the Neighborhood) is compact master class: the jokes still in the background if you look up.

  5. S01E06 Testimony of Evil (Dead Men Don't Laugh)

Testimony of Evil (Dead Men Don't Laugh) is the sixth and last: the epitaph ABC wrote by canceling a show for requiring eyes.

  1. S01E01

A Substantial Gift (The Broken Promise)

Sally, a bank teller deeply in debt, robs her own bank and plants evidence that implicates a fairly commonplace man who was present during the crime. Police Squad, a special unit of the police force, is called to investigate a double shooting that happened during the robbery. However, the stories just don't add up. The evidence builds and points in Sally's direction, but it's up to Frank to find the clues that will put her away.

  2. S01E02

Ring of Fear (A Dangerous Assignment)

Frank investigates a veteran boxer who lately has been throwing his fights. He takes the boxer under his wing in order to expose the boxer's corrupt manager. Unfortunately, the manger has kidnapped the boxer's girlfriend and put the boxer's title fight in jeopardy. Frank now tries to save the boxer's girlfriend in the hopes that the boxer won't have to throw the match so he can have a shot at rejuvenating his career in the ring.

  3. S01E03

The Butler Did It (A Bird in the Hand)

The daughter of a textile tycoon is kidnapped and Frank must find her before it's too late to pay the ransom.

  4. S01E04

Revenge and Remorse (The Guilty Alibi)

Frank's investigation into the bombing of a courtroom leads to a man who was convicted by him in the past.

  5. S01E05

Rendezvous at Big Gulch (Terror in the Neighborhood)

Frank and Norberg go undercover to investigate a protection racket.

  6. S01E06

Testimony of Evil (Dead Men Don't Laugh)

The death of a nightclub comic takes Frank undercover to investigate a suspected drug ring.
