How this season is filed

Filed by Tessa Quinn · Spoiler-Free (Mostly)

The High Chaparral is late-western family empire in Arizona Territory: Leif Erickson's Big John Cannon, a bilingual ranch household, and border tensions the genre usually flattened. Tucson-area shooting gave Mexican-American characters more room than most horse operas. Adult western TV after the boom crested — marriage alliances, ranch politics, landscape that is not a backlot.
