How this season is filed

Filed by Rex Fontaine · Golden Age Dispatch

The Bellamy townhouse splits the frame: Edwardian masters above, servants with plot power below. Masterpiece Theatre's great ambassador, long before country-house soaps became a streaming habit. Class as dual protagonist, and the below-stairs breakouts that wrecked viewers more than drawing-room manners ever could.

TV Flash files Season 5 of Upstairs, Downstairs (1971–1975) on ITV / PBS as the last listed season of 5 — 16 listed hours, 1975-09-07–1975-12-21 from “On with the Dance” (S05E01) to “Whither Shall I Wander?” (S05E16). Titles, dates, and synopses on file — no invented recaps.

Desk essentials in this season

  1. S05E01 On with the Dance

On with the Dance is the last-season premiere as a party title. Edwardian afterglow: the dual-protagonist house still dancing, the servant hours still the ones that bruise.

  2. S05E16 Whither Shall I Wander?

Whither Shall I Wander? is the 1975 closer. Five seasons of townhouse class war, then a hymn-title bow: Masterpiece's ambassador, below-stairs still holding the plot.
